At around 7:20am Sunday 13th January 2013 a 3.4 magnitude Earthquake occurred approximately 10km off of the northern coast of Tasmania.
Geoscience Australia seismologist Jonathan Bathgate has said that tremors were felt all across Tasmania, and that Earthquakes were fairly common ( a 3.6 was felt in 2006 and in 2007 a 3.8 occurred), and that it was unlikely any damage had been sustained. Tasmania sits within a continental plate, so the Earthquakes felt here are classed as intra-plate events, and fairly large scale Earthquakes are not common.
